Cape Town – The Mother City as South Africa’s tourism destination of note is definitely one to watch when it comes to the coolest and most innovative trends. It’s Central Business District is always vibrant and you can find anything from bars, museums, bookshops, and churches.

In its daily interactions with businesses and residents, The Cape Town Central City Improvement District says it has been carefully monitoring new investment in the Mother City’s bustling and eclectic CBD, identifying some interesting inner-city trends developing this year that will excite locals and give tourists some great ideas of where to visit.

Take a look at the top 10 trends in town for 2017. 

Co-working

The Cape Town CBD has seven coworking paces on offer! In February 2015, there were only three and by the end of that year, it increased to seven. The new additions were Cartel House Cube Workspace, Siyelo CoWork and Work & Co.

Veganism

There is no need to struggle for vegan restaurants anymore. Not eating and using animal products is gaining traction in Cape Town, with the CBD home to some of the best-known vegan eateries and shops in the city.

Millennials

Millennials are taking over the CBD. in a CCID’s third annual residential survey conducted in October 2015, it showed that  44% of CBD residents were born after 1980.

Gastropubs

A gastropub is a bar and restaurant that also serves high-end food. There has been a substantial increase in the number of CBD gastropubs as restaurateurs tap into a market hungry for casual but delicious dining.

Loop Street

Remember how Bree Street was the new Long Street? Odds are Loop Street will be the new Bree. Galleries, restaurants, clubs: it has it all.

Biker bars

Café racer culture is alive and well in the Central City. Don your leathers and head to one of these joints for a taste of biker chic.

The rise of The Foreshore

The CTICC expansion and building of KPMG’s new offices are some of the development projects underway which shows a rise of the  Foreshore. With the completion of The Towers redevelopment and Media24 upgrade, it started to shift gears and the new Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital also recently opened its doors.

Rooftop bars

Chilling and having a drink with a gorgeous view is a must! Rooftop bars are definitely a trend and CBD spots are happy to oblige.

Surfing

For a downtown with no direct connection with the sea, there are loads of surf shops in the Central City.

Residential Development

High-rise living is the new era in the Central City. The conversion of Triangle House into the Radisson Blu Hotel & Residence ushered this new trend in. It is the tallest residential block in Cape Town. The Sentinel in Leeuwen Street is a new build that should start transferring at the end of the year. Also on the cards are Urban on Bree, the Zero-2-One Tower, 16 on Bree and Goldies.
